Via twitter, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick has reported that Justin Duchscherer has agreed to a one-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, pending a physical. He could make up to $4.5m in incentives, most of which are performance based.
Supposedly, the Nats were one of three final destinations for Duchsherer, along with the Seattle Mariners and the Baltimore Orioles.
This is a shame for the Nationals, because they were attempting to add yet another low-risk, high-reward type of player. Unfortunately, as has been the recent trend, yet another free agent has snubbed the Nationals organization.
Duchsherer, 33, would have given Washington another viable arm for the back end of the rotation. He would have competed with a very crowded cast for the last two spots at in the starting rotation. Instead, the team will have Garrett Mock, Yunesky Maya, Tom Gorzelanny and Ross Detwiler in an open competition to crack the roster.
