Is Jayson Werth Matt Holliday or Jason Bay?
“Put Werth’s career numbers prior to his free agency next to those of the two big-ticket right-handed power-hitting outfielders last offseason (Jason Bay and Matt Holliday), as we did in the chart to your right, and you can see just how well Werth made out.
The Nationals paid Werth as if he were Holliday, but statistically speaking, he compares more strongly to Bay.”
This is an interesting point by Derek Czenczelewski (ESPN), and he is right, Werth benefitted from when he became a free agent. Contracts were bigger this year than they have been the past several years and while Werth may not be better than the two other hitters mentioned here, he was one of the top free-agent position players this winter and was paid accordingly.
However, I’m not sure I agree with him that Werth is closer to Bay than he is Holliday. Take a look at the below graph, especially over the last two years.
Did the Washington Nationals luck out on Brandon Webb and Zack Greinke?
According to NBC’s Hardball Talk: “The Rangers are now limiting (Brandon) Webb to purely flat-ground work in camp because they’re not confident in the strength of his throwing shoulder, which has been giving him problems now for two straight years. He has been banned from the mound indefinitely.”
Sidestepped that landmine! Shoulder problems simply don’t get better, if it’s a problem in February, it will be an issue in April too.
According to JS Online, Zack Greinke said of his teammates : “I like a lot of the guys,” Greinke said at one point. “I haven’t seen anyone yet that’s annoying to me.”
He also said about the meda: “Probably 99% of the time I do it like this is because every day I come to the park and want to get focused on my start, and then random people come and waste my time talking every day. It takes eight minutes to get a real question out because they’re like buttering me up. Then they get to the question and it’s a stupid question. So it’s a waste of 10 minutes, and in that 10-minute time I don’t get to do what I needed to do.”
We all know of Greinke’s social anxiety issues, perhaps this is just his way of adjusting to a new place. Either way, it isn’t pretty…but will he still make outs? Probably.
Adam Wainwright may need Tommy John Surgery…
This is not good news for the Cardinals. With the improvement on the Milwaukee Brewers and the returning strength of the Cincinnati Reds, the National League Central race was going to be a battle even witha healthy Wainwright. It was going to be a battle the Cardinals were going to have to win in order to give Pujols a good case to return to St. Louis. Without Wainwright, it may not be possible, and Pujols could leave for a team with a better chance to win, and who will give him the contract he deserves.
No More Mexicutioner
Joakim Soria has asked his fans to no longer call him the Mexicutioner in light of the violence in his home country Mexico. Soria has instead lobbied his fans to come up with a new nickname for him on Twitter. Good for Soria to be able to see passed himself and see the bigger picture…few athletes today can say as much.
