Nats Win Big In Extra Innings Over The Mets

The Washington Nationals (4-5) defeated the New York Mets (4-5) by a score of 7-3 in extra innings today.

Talking Points:

-       Despite falling down early, the Nationals were able to battle back late in the game to tie it up in the eighth, then pounded in four runs in the 11th to steal the victory.

-       Adam LaRoche had to leave the game in the 11th after apparently hurting his groin, it’s unclear if he will be available to play Tuesday.

-       Jason Marquis threw a very effective six innings as he allowed just three-earned runs and struck out nine batters. Still, he will be more effective once he gets better at letting runners on base. Despite the strikeouts he still allowed nine Mets to get on through seven hits and two walks.

-       A combination of Chad Gaudin, Tyler Clippard, Drew Storen, and Sean Burnett combined for five scoreless innings out of the bullpen. That crew allowed only two base runners and struck out eight batters.

-       Chris Young pitched a gem for the Mets, showing the Nationals that perhaps they should have shelled out more for him when he was a free agent this winter. Today he pitched seven inning of one hit baseball, and now has a 1.46 ERA in two starts for the Mets. The real question is, will he stay healthy?

-       The Nationals eight run rally was sparked by a clutch single from Ivan Rodriguez. The emotion on the face from the former World Series MVP said enough, the frustrated future hall of famer finally had a breakthrough.

Our Reaction:

Today’s victory is an emotional one for a lot of reasons. First, the club did it without their star player, face of the franchise Ryan Zimmerman. Zimmerman will be down for at least one game with an abdominal strain, and in the past that has meant the Nats were left essentially punchless with the bat. The club did not roll over today though, and it was a blast to see.

It was also emotional form the standpoint that the players who came through big for the Nats were the ones who had been struggling most early on this season. Ivan Rodriguez was 2-4 on the night with arguably the biggest hit of the young season coming in the 11th inning when he drove home the winning run.  Jayson Nix hit a monster shot to bring in three insurance runs in the 11th, his first three RBI of the year. Also, despite having to leave with an injury, Adam LaRoche reached base three times today with two walks and a hit.

There’s nothing like ending a road trip with a good bit of success to take with you to the home stand.
