The Washington Nationals have announced all-universe prospect Steven Strasburg is set to make his 2011 debut on Tuesday, September 6th vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers at Nationals Park.
Strasburg underwent season-ending Tommy John Surgury last season where in 12 starts he went 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and struck out 92 while walking just 17 in 68 innings pitched.
The good news from this is that Strasburg had a speedy and successful recovery, as it was almost 12 months to the day when he had the procedure done. However, I have been skeptical about rushing him back to the Nationals so soon. Strasburg is sure to be hyped up in his few September starts, which could lead to overthrowing. So why not allow him to take September and the rest of the off-season to recoperate?
If anything, this will create some buzz in DC late in the season, something Nats fans aren’t that accostimed to. It will be great to see him out there throwing again, but you can count on me having my fingers crossed.
