Zimmerman has A/C Inflammation, Feels Good About Prognosis

The news that Washington Nationals fans have been waiting for has finally arrived, and it’s good… mostly. Amanda Comak of The Washington Times reports that Ryan Zimmerman has the A/C joint issue in his shoulder that was reported earlier, but there is no “injury” to speak of in his shoulder. This is stellar news for the Nationals, and Zimmerman feels confident that “he can’t hurt it more.”

It is still possible, though, that Zimmerman could end up on the 15-day disabled list with the injury. The good news here is, if he does, he doesn’t think the trip would be “extensive.”. Any extensive absence would continue to hurt the Nationals offensively in the heart of the order in a significant way. Since Zimmerman left the starting roster to deal with the inflammation, the Nats have seen Mark DeRosa hit third twice. Chad Tracy will get the honors on Wednesday night. DeRosa is hitting just .091, while Tracy his hitting .200 in 16 plate appearances. Zimmerman was struggling himself a bit at .224, but his presence in the line up causes some discomfort for opposing pitchers.

Until Zimmerman has a chance to try to hit on Thursday, we won’t know much. Maybe it ends up working out, but it is still very possible that a trip to the DL is in the works. Since he hasn’t pinch hit though, the Nats could backdate his DL trip, which would make him eligible to come back earlier but also give some bench depth for a team in desperate need of offensive assistance.  And if you believe Byron Kerr, it may be time for Tyler Moore.
