Off-The-Field Recap: Too Many Wins

Mina Dunn June 17, 2016 2016 Articles 1 Comment

The Nationals won a lot of games this week. Like, a lot. Which inarguably got pretty boring, so they spiced things up with these off-field endeavors:

1. I can think of a lot of imitations that are better than the real thing, like rubber dog poop or an article claiming a 500 foot sea monster to have been found. Too Many Nats, a spoof of the sitcom intro to Too Many Cooks can now be added to that list. Too Many Cooks has its place in comedy history, but any TV buff will likely tell you that Too Many Nats has surpassed its greatness. The Nationals subreddit provided the fan base, as it consistently does, with such a masterpiece on Monday afternoon and has since been received well by fans and broadcasters alike.

2. This week, thanks to the buzz surrounding the Nats-Cubs series, players gave a handful of extremely informative interviews with the guys of Intentional Talk. Ben Revere, Ryan Zimmerman, Max Scherzer and Joe Ross each contributed somewhere around seven minutes of uninterrupted charm.

3. Bryce Harper has always been vocal about the admiration he has for his dad, so NewEra’s new father’s day commercial is less than surprising. But, its predictability didn’t make it any less sweet.

4. Everyone has different likes and dislikes; Some like mustard on hotdogs and some like long walks on the beach. Jayson Werth likes walkoff base hits. “But that’s on-field stuff!” you may protest. Well, party-pooper, Jayson and his notoriously pleasant self made sure that this could rightfully be included by giving some of the most memorable interviews in Nationals history. Jayson identifies the D.C. Strangler and has some choice words for those who question his ability due to his age. Here, we relive the hits and their aftermaths like a grandma talking you through a scrapbook.

And here’s Sunday’s interview:

NOW, Jayson likes walk-offs so much, he did it again on Wednesday, too.

5. The Dream Gala, held annually by the Nationals to fundraise for “community initiatives focused on academics, the arts, nutrition and sports,” according to the Nats website, took place on June 11. The Gala, besides raising money for more than worthy causes, brings together two Extremely Good things: baseball players and bowties. The Nationals provided the photographic evidence of this fact.

That’s a wrap on tonight’s #DreamGala.

6. Pedro Martinez was a great pitcher during his tenure and now continues to charm his way into the hearts of baseball fans as an analyst on MLB Network. Every pitcher, young or old, would feel lucky to be compared to Pedro. Even more so, if it’s Martinez doing the comparing:

My final strike is for Max Scherzer. Tonight he brought some of my own games back to memory. Great job 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

— Pedro Martinez (@45PedroMartinez) June 14, 2016

7. Stephen Strasburg has spent the season striking out upwards of a million batters and impersonating James Bond villains, but he has reached peak adorable by reading to a group of children at Hearst Elementary School.

8. Two of arguably the biggest Theme games took place this week, one of which being 80s Night. A lot of fun is had with 80s night by both the players and the fans; Bryce chooses songs from the 80s for his walk up music and the fans attend decked out in side-pony tails and leg warmers.

But this year, most importantly of all, we got to see Ben Revere rock a Jheri Curl.

9. Since 2003 the Nationals and Team D.C. annually hold Nats Night OUT, an LGBT Pride night. Wednesday’s Night OUT, usually an exuberant atmosphere, was understandably shadowed with grief after the Pulse Shooting in Orlando on Sunday, according to the Washington Post’s Dan Steinberg. This week has been unspeakably difficult for the LGBT community, but the night provided meaningful sodality. Steinberg goes further into detail about the night here.
