Off-The-Field Recap: Off-Day Instas

With three off-days in the last eight day span, the Nationals had plenty of time for birthday parties and nights out in DC. Bryce Harper and fiancee Kayla Varner showed off their cooking skills, Wilson Ramos (and his daughter) celebrated birthdays, and prospect Koda Glover showed off his instagram game.

1. Wilson Ramos turned 30 this week, which earned him the usual shout out from the Nationals official team accounts. But it was his three layer buffalo/All-Star Game commemorative cake that probably outdid most else. Ramos posted the cake to his instagram after tweeting his thanks for the birthday wishes he received. Ramos’ wife Yely (who posted these adorable photos from their daughters birthday) also shared a video of the family singing “Happy Birthday” to Willy.

Gracias a mama Lili y a mi esposa por este hermoso regalo la torta del Buffalo @yelyescalona @lilimayorca

2. Sammy Solis also had a birthday this week. Solis has hammered his way through 28 years of life, and his dad celebrated by sharing some of Baby Sammy’s earlier artwork. There were no elaborate cakes posted to social media, but Bob Solis may have gone a step above if you value school-project proof of athletes realizing their childhood dreams above sugar. Though Bob has only ever tweeted 5 times, Sammy’s older sister LouAnn is far more active on twitter, expressing her Nats allegiance. LouAnn also wished Sammy a happy birthday, which blessed us with Sammy baby pictures. And it’s a cute baby picture too, like the kind overbearing moms show off on first dates.

Happy 28th birthday to the greatest son in the world! So glad UR living your dream, son! Love, Dad. @Sammy22Solis pic.twitter.com/CY0UbTzRdw

Happy Birthday to my little brother @sammy22solis Thanks for putting up with years of me pinching your back while mom was trying to take family pictures. I love you and am proud of you every day.

3. Jose Lobaton was placed on the 15 day DL on July 29 (retroactive to July 20) with elbow tendinitis. While Lobaton hasn’t been able to contribute on the field, he has been contributing to the Instagram feeds of all who follow him by posting videos of his ever adorable family.

4. Famously, it wasn’t until Bryce Harper finally removed the 100 emoji sticker from the bottom of his bat that he his 100th home run for a grand slam early in the season. Possibly in an effort to redeem what clearly offended the baseball gods, Harper put a 202 sticker, in the style of the 100 emoji, on the bottom of his bat on Friday upon returning to Nats Park after a west coast road trip. The number is the DC area code, the city in which Harper enjoyed a night out on his night off. But not before he spent the day at nearby Great Falls park in McLean, Virginia.

5. Upon losing Doug Fister to free agency during the 2015 off season, the Nats lost their most prolific cat person, leaving the dog lovers like the Scherzers and Gio Gonzalez. Max and Erica Scherzer have been vocal about adopting and Gio has made his close relationship with his dog Stitch evident. Both have been posted about their use of Off Leash K9 Training, but all that matters is that their promotion of the company means lots of endearing dog pictures.

Wouldn’t have trusted anyone else with my 2 pups, @OffLeashK9Train you guys are the best!! #Stitch2.0 #Kylo2.0 pic.twitter.com/i3aWXwIXi8

6. Lea Moures gave birth to her and Gio Gonzalez’s baby boy Enzo in April. There have been few, if any, pictures of the little one since, but this week Gio posted a picture of Enzo sitting atop his shoulder at Nats Park at Family Day a few weeks back. Though Enzo is facing away from the camera, he’s sporting his very own Gonzalez 47 jersey, so he must be happy.

7. Bryce Harper has publicly acknowledged that Kayla Varner was in his life (for instance, in his 2015 MVP acceptance speech) before they officially announced their engagement. Since the announcement Harper has been posting lots of pictures and videos to social media involving Varner, something he had stopped doing since their wedding didn’t go on as planned during the 2014 off season. This week he posted a picture of their date night and a video of him appreciating his wife-to-be’s cooking abilities.

8. Koda Glover was sent back down to the minors after a successful major league debut with the Nationals on July 24. Since being optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse, Koda has posted to his Instagram about 10 times, which is only a lot especially when you consider that he has posted 13 pictures in total. His posts aren’t just over-edited boring pictures of food as one might expect from an Instagram beginner, he instead showcases everyone from his adorable son (who, by the way, sports a Bryce Harper haircut) to Lucas Giolito and Bryan Harper.
