Off-The-Field Recap: Gold Medal Edition

Baby humans, baby dogs, and gold medals are probably among the world’s greatest natural healers. The Nationals dropped four games in a row this week, once again leaving the burden of healing on off-field things.

1. It’s very important to know who your closers are as people, so that when they blow a save during in the postseason you know if you should be angry and devastated or worried for their emotional well-being and subsequent career trajectory. If Sean Burnett, who is now back in the Nationals organization after being acquired from the Minnesota Twins on August 19, gets called up from Syracuse in September and subsequently lets a postseason game get out of hand, I may well be a devastated, worried mess. At least, if his shoes are any indication of his character.

They always talk about players being kids at heart, but Burnett just raised, or lowered, the limbo bar to a level Ben Revere probably couldn’t clear. This is a short JOKE.

2. For those who know that DL stints are wormholes that warp all time and space, Ryan Zimmerman’s new beard makes sense. The beard made its Major League debut Saturday, just after Zimmerman was cleared of PED allegations from the winter. The first pitch Zim saw off his DL/wormhole stint was cranked to the left field bleachers, and since then, the beard has made its case to stay.

Hahahahha ooooh man he’s never shaving.

3. Katie Ledecky is not a one-trick swimming pony. She can make people scream at TVs in excitement and throw first pitches like only a true professional could. She did plenty of both on Wednesday when she graced the mound (and the clubhouse and the broadcast booth) with her presence. Bryce Harper volunteered to hold Ledecky’s medals next to her while she threw her pitch, for which she had practiced with her neighbors.

Most Valuable Medal-Holder. Thanks @bharper3407 and @nationals for a great night!

Katie Ledecky is even better than you at captioning pictures.

Though Harper didn’t get to hold any medals on Thursday, there was another Olympian at Nats Park. Helen Maroulis, who is the first U.S. woman to win gold in wrestling, threw the first pitch and lifted more Racing Presidents in one night than anyone ever has. With Helen’s pitch, the Nats gained the longest active streak of Olympian first pitches, which so far, has been better than a hit streak.

There aren’t enough 💪s on the internet to properly caption this picture of @helen_maroulis and @Teddy26Nats. pic.twitter.com/00gDmCv0rc

4. When American League managers come to Nats Park, you learn a lot about them. With Buck Showalter, it’s that he’s probably leaving everything in his will to that jacket he never takes off and that he is a Racing Presidents fanatic. He wants to bring a version of the race to Baltimore, as all great leaders do.

5. Dusty Baker has made it his life’s mission to wash out the bitterness that Matt Williams’ broken Babe Ruth impersonation promise left, one picture in a park ranger hat at a time. The hat doubled as a party hat, as its presence was a result of the National Park Service celebrating its 100th birthday, officially making it older than Jayson Werth.

6. THIS IS A BABY. IT’S GIO GONZALEZ’S BABY. IT’S THE FIRST PICTURE HE’S POSTED OF HIS FACE. LOOK AT IT. Enzo was born in March, and in that time he’s already cozied up to what was once his dad’s best friend. The Espinosas even got him a killer bib to prove it.
