Off-the-Field Recap: Celebration!

Mina Dunn September 30, 2016 2016 Articles Leave a Comment

It’s been a week since the Nationals clinched the NL East with a win against the Pittsburgh Pirates and with the Philadelphia Phillies surpassing expectations by not blowing a ten run lead. In this week since, Bryce Harper has been sidelined with a thumb injury and Wilson Ramos’ ACL may have put his last play as a National in the books. Baseball can be one cruel mistress, but sometimes you can find light at the end of the tunnel. As luck will have it, there are pictures and videos of your favorite baseball team clinching a division title for the third time in five years. Lookit.

1. Jayson Werth and Dan Kolko are the go-to best interviewer/interviewee pair on the Nats. (Baseball-Reference doesn’t have any stats for this, so you’ll have to just trust it.) Werth’s manbun and his gluten-free beer joined the duo to deliver another gem. Werth, a dad of two, gets offended at being called a parent is the peak of the interview.

Werth discussed how determined he was to win it all, and also continued to display his affinity for the word “ass.” He is an ass man, if you will, and no man or federal regulations department can stifle him.

In the interest of full disclosure, Kolko was likely on the verge of catching beer induced hypothermia.

2. Having made the trek to PNC Park, a number of Nats fans’ dedication was rewarded with Bob Carpenter handshakes (which have probably been developed and perfected over time) and beer-soaked highfives.

3. Okay, here comes the most important sentence I’ve ever written with TNB. When you read it, lift with your legs and not your back, because this is big. Prepare accordingly.

Bryce Harper wore a Katie Ledecky swim cap during the celebration.
Whether he admits it or not, Harper is Ledecky’s biggest fan and most ultimate fangirl. Are they both superior, dominant athletes? Yes. But are they a perfect duo that could rule the DC area if they wanted to? Also yes. Harper is the Robin to Ledecky’s Batman and it has produced this magic moment.

Glad the cap is getting some good use @Bharper3407! Congrats Nats! https://t.co/YN0w0LV79P

— Katie Ledecky (@katieledecky) September 25, 2016

Ledecky had sent Harper the swimcap after he graciously held her medals when she threw the first pitch in hopes that he would be able to tame his hair as he “rounded third base.”

4. Dusty Baker is the best hugger on the Nationals and we should have known it all along. No clear favorite for Nationals Best Hugger had emerged in wake of the Dan Uggla Era. Nationals best attempts to keep this information, the Nats celebration (and this clip) has provided the necessary evidence to crown Baker king.

5. Wilson Ramos was in the midst of the season of his life in his contract year before his ACL betrayed him upon ground impact after having saved a high Ryan Zimmerman throw. He’s since been outrighted to the operation table and then to rehab for the offseason, unable to contribute to the finale of the postseason run he helped build. Hopefully the Buffalo can stick around though, because beside the experience he can impart to Pedro Severino and Spencer Kieboom, the man is an 80 grade celebrator.

We aré in October thanks god for this and all you do for me and my career #onepursuit @nationals Estamos en octubre gracias mi Dios por esto y por todo lo q haces por mí y mi cerrera

6. Michael A. Taylor is just as aloof this playoff run as he was in 2014. Just lookin’ around, taking in his surroundings, minding his own business as a National League East division champion. If consistency is what you seek, look no further than Taylor.

Thanks for the assist, @NorthCaroliNats. This is why I was looking for MAT pic.twitter.com/HhWVSv4dwP

— Johann (@NLBeastNats) September 25, 2016

In a crowd of wild athletes, he is the quiet, steady rock. The Pocahontas song “swift as a coursing river,” is actually finished by the lyric “consistent as a Michael A. Taylor.”

7. Max Scherzer is his own kind of consistent. Consistent in that you always know that you never know what he’ll say or do. A beautiful thing in it’s own right, but even more beautiful was the human fireball celebrate his team’s hard earned accomplishment in goggles with different colored lenses.

8. Jose Lobaton gave the people what they wanted on Saturday night. Lots of selfies and lots of cigar smoke. This here is what baseball insiders call clutch. Here are some of the best of what Ramos’ possible replacement had to offer:

Gracias dios por una más. Dios mediante este año si lograremos
