Scherzer Fights Boos with Boos in Philly

Mina Dunn May 08, 2017 2017 Articles 2 Comments

At Nats Park, boos are usually reserved for Metro closing announcements, postgame press conferences, Jose Tabata, and politicians. Citizens Bank Park is much more liberal in its application of such heckling. Jayson Werth is a consistent recipient of those boos, and Max Scherzer, apparently a varsity booleader back in the day, delights in contributing.

Werth deposits homeruns at The Bank like the federal funds rate for dingers is high. Each year since 2014, Philadelphia has hosted the most Werth homers outside of Washington. Scherzer was a year late to Werth’s reign of terror (joining the Nats in 2015), but jumped right into the fun by booing Werth each time Phillies fans would.

Scherzer lived up to his legacy Sunday during Werth’s two-homer, 4-for-4 day when Werth hit his first bomb of the game, a first inning solo shot.

The highlight of this practice thus far came when Scherzer took his act a step further while Werth rounded the bases after belting a two-run homer to left. Scherzer turned and directed his boos to every corner of Citizens Bank Park, the stuff every Nats fans dreams are made of.

Scherzer’s charade even bested Werth’s batflip, which might even outscore Simone Biles on floor.

Ah, the City of Brotherly Boos.

Jayson Werth on the boos he gets here in Philly: “All I hear is cheers. There’s a lot of love out here.”

Dusty should’ve left Romero in instead of playing the percentages and replacing him with Blake Treinen. Romero was getting the job done. Matt Albers, or Fat Albert as I fondly refer to him, certainly didn’t have his usual “A” stuff with him and after that error in the 9th it looked like he wasn’t going to be able to lift his ample butt off the grass. Can’t win ’em all but the Nats shoulda completed the sweep, especially after the day Werth had.
