The Nationals… did some stuff that didn’t involve baseball this week. Here are their stories.
- It is pressing that the Nationals’ attendance at Thursday night’s NBA Finals Game 1 first be discussed. Joe Ross, Brian Goodwin, Chris Heisey, and Max Scherzer all shared the photographic evidence of their escapades. And that might just be Trea Turner’s voice in Goodwin’s Insta story. There were far fewer ectatic celebrations than the last group outing to an NBA Playoff game, but the posts were still acceptable.

- All week, national sports media members had it out over whether there was a fight at Monday’s Nationals game. “Bryce Harper definitely did not charge the mound and start a miniature mosh pit!” some said. While others held to the idea that “Bryce for sure killed every single human in AT&T Park.” Though we may never know what truly happened that fateful Memorial Day, Harper’s wife Kayla was forced to defend her husband’s honor on her way to a European excursion. Kayla pulled no punches and took no names. Literally, every single person she replied to is dead now. Wow.

- Before each start, Max Scherzer eats a giant roast beef sandwich. Willie Mays, who has no such taste for sandwiches, is more of a hotdog guy. According to quintessential reporting done by the Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes, Mays asked the most important question an all-time great could ask a reigning Cy Young winner: “Will you please get me a hot dog?” And the rest is history.
- The biggest story out of the Nationals Little League tour was Bryce Harper decrying participation trophies (and then retweeting the quote from Laura Ingraham), but even though the soundbyte wasn’t as cringey in video context, I have rolled my eyes so hard I pulled a muscle, so I can’t write about it. Thankfully, Ryan Zimmerman, Trea Turner, and other Nationals do not require any eye muscles to write about.

- The most important thing to know about Wilmer Difo is that he is the very greatest baseball human on the face of this earth. Wherever there is a celebration to be had, there is a Difo, whether he’s gone 0-fer (which, to be real, is often the case) or he’s thrown a hit or two in there. No matter the day he has, there is always at least one MASN shot in which he can be found smiling. He’s great, okay, but his new walk-up song is greater. “Unchained Melody” and “My Girl” are his newest choices which he genuinely loves and defends. “Extremely unorthodox,” Jayson Werth calls it.
With his third walkup song, Difo now has “My Girl” by The Temptations…and the crowd was singing along as he stepped in. Fantastic.

I asked Wilmer if he’d been pranked by that song playing yesterday. His eyes lit up. Said no way. Dude loves him some Righteous Brothers. https://t.co/dsCguDU1TD

- As the saying goes, the bat flip doesn’t fall far from the tree. McKinsey Zimmerman tried that theory in a vigorous one-time experiment, involving a whiffle ball and a commendable home run trot. It turns out, she has just as much movement pre-swing as her dad. If this is a ploy to get Zimmy to the All-Star Game, I am not opposed.
